Ricky Ponting, Australia

Ponting is a dangerous batsman because he makes big scores quickly. A master of the one-day arena who has kept pace as the game has raced forward. Dominant at No.3, he is always keen to take charge, stepping forward to drive through cover and flick through midwicket, or easing back to pull and push in front of point. There are bigger hitters and smoother strikers, but Ponting is effective in most situations - and the more pressure the better. As captain, he has guided his side to two World Cup trophies - during unbeaten campaigns - and was also part of the success in England in 1999. He commands a formidable team and is
more likely to lead by instinct in the shorter form.

Daniel Vettori, New Zealand

Daniel Vettori as the captain and best player in the team, Vettori is comfortably the most important man in New Zealand's World Cup campaign. Opposition batsmen are often content to see him off and attack the fast bowlers, but New Zealand are at their best when Vettori is also outsmarting batsmen and taking wickets. On the subcontinental pitches, he must use his own bowling as an attacking option. He is also one of the more reliable batsmen in New Zealand's order, although his impact in ODIs has not been as great as in Tests. He is the only man in the squad to have been to three previous World Cups, although he did not play a game in 1999.
